Aquarium Drunkard

Apparently this is music day.

Aquarium Drunkard is a fantastic amalgam of music, and writing about music. There is so much here it’s overwhelming in the best possible way.

Originating in 2005 and based in Los Angeles, Aquarium Drunkard is an eclectic audio journal focused on daily reviews, interviews, features, podcasts and sessions. Digging globally, AD bridges contemporary sounds with psych, jazz, avant-garde, folk, garage, funk and beyond. For heads, by heads.

There is a lot here: Podcasts, SIRIUS/XM broadcasts, writing, and reviews. It’s a treasure trove, but don’t take my word for it. Go take a look at the lists of guest contributors, and interviews. This is the real deal.

There is also a Patreon page.

Hollow Earth Radio

Hollow Earth Radio is an old-school, freeform, indie radio station broadcasting an eclectic mix of things you won’t hear on traditional radio.

“Our focus is on audio not often heard on the traditional radio dial, including: found sound, field recordings, forgotten music, local musicians, bedroom recordings, lo-fi demos, dreams, storytelling, conversations from within marginalized communities and things that feel real.”

I found the station on my SONOS via TuneIn radio, but there are several other ways to listen right here.

These handmade Japanese woodblock prints are beautiful

StarFox
The left cartouche means “Fur and claw, steel and flame”, and the right cartouche literally means “star” and “fox”.

Zelda
The left cartouche phonetically reads “Rin-ku”, and the right cartouche means “He swings the Commanding Sword”.

Mario
The top cartouche phonetically reads “Ma-ri-o”, and the bottom cartouche means “Beloved friends, dear rivals”.

David Bull makes woodblock prints using centuries-old traditional Japanese materials and techniques. UkiyoeHeroes is an Etsy shop showcasing his work using those techniques to illustrate video-game subjects.

Quarantine Country Loaves 6April20

13% Type 85 wheat
6% organic medium white rye
.2% malted barley flour
79% King Arthur bread flour
81% hydration

These loaves are milder than the past several due to a smaller percentage of whole grain. I kept the hydration high (because I’m a showoff) and the result is a tender, and very open crumb.

I’ve been on a quest to get better at the basics for a while now. My focus is always on the flavor and texture that each change in grain mix brings. I’m working to build that knowledge into a reflex before I go back to the additions of some of my earlier breads.

I’ll get back to more freshly milled whole grains next week. I’ve got some kamut I’d like to try so look out for that.
